Music at Weston Secondary School is designed to inspire creativity, confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of music in all students. Through a broad and inclusive curriculum, students learn to perform, compose and listen to music from a wide range of styles, cultures and traditions. Lessons are practical and engaging, helping students to develop musical skills, an understanding of notation and technology, and an appreciation of music as an important part of culture and society.
Students benefit from specialist music teachers and experienced instrumental staff who provide individual and group learning opportunities, including instrumental and vocal lessons, ensembles, choirs and performances. Music supports students’ personal development by building confidence, teamwork and resilience, while encouraging creativity and self-expression. Students are actively encouraged to take part in performances and musical opportunities beyond the classroom.
At Key Stage 4, students can choose to study the Pearson Level 1/2 BTEC Tech Award in Music Practice. This vocational course builds on the skills developed at Key Stage 3 and gives students the opportunity to explore music performance, creation and production in real-world contexts. Through practical projects, rehearsals and performances, students develop technical skills, professionalism and reflective practice, preparing them for further study, training or a wide range of future pathways within and beyond the music industry.
