At Weston Secondary School, our vision is to develop skilled, confident and motivated young people who take pride in producing high quality practical work. Carpentry provides students with the opportunity to explore real construction methods, gain technical competence and understand how buildings are created, maintained and improved. Students develop problem solving, accuracy, resilience and a strong work ethic through practical tasks that reflect genuine industry practice.
Through hands on learning, students experience the satisfaction of making, shaping and assembling materials with precision. They begin to understand how construction influences everyday life and how essential the built environment is to communities. Our aim is to help students appreciate the value of practical skills, develop confidence in using tools and equipment and discover pathways into construction and the wider built environment sector.
Carpentry at Key Stage 4 is delivered through the BTEC Construction and the Built Environment qualification, which introduces students to both practical skills and technical knowledge that reflect real industry expectations. Students learn how to work safely, measure and mark out accurately, interpret drawings, select appropriate tools and construct joints and components to a high standard.
In Component 1, students explore the wider construction industry by learning about low rise construction requirements, sustainability, modern construction methods, and the structural forms used in buildings. This develops their understanding of how materials, environmental factors and design decisions impact the performance and safety of buildings.
The curriculum provides a balance of practical workshop learning and essential construction theory. Students complete Component 2 where they develop practical competence in jointing, cutting, assembling and checking the accuracy of their final outcomes. They also learn how to assess risk, choose suitable materials, and understand the importance of tolerances and quality control
This curriculum aligns with UK vocational expectations by ensuring students develop practical ability, technical accuracy, industry vocabulary, environmental awareness and a strong foundation for apprenticeships or further study in construction.
