The Business Studies curriculum at Weston Secondary School is designed to build students’ deep and secure knowledge of how businesses operate within a dynamic and evolving environment, reflecting the structure and intentions of the Edexcel GCSE Business Studies specification. The specification emphasises developing commercially minded and enterprising individuals and understanding decision‑making within real business contexts, and our curriculum is intentionally aligned with these aims.

Our intent is to cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and an entrepreneurial mindset, enabling students to navigate complex business situations with confidence. Our curriculum support student’s critical analysis of the world through the lense of a business.

In line with the specification the two overarching themes are:

  • Theme 1: Investigating Small Business
  • Theme 2: Building a Business

A core objective of our curriculum is to ensure students develop secure mastery of fundamental business concepts, including enterprise, spotting business opportunities, finance, marketing, human resources and operations management reflecting the specification’s detailed content such as business revenues, costs and profits, the marketing mix, organisational structures, and human resource decisions. Through repeated retrieval, applied tasks and exposure to authentic business scenarios, students embed knowledge over time and learn to connect ideas across the full breadth of the course.

We also support students in developing a sophisticated understanding of the economic, social and ethical influences that shape business behaviour. This aligns directly with the specification’s focus on external influences including stakeholders, technology, legislation, and the economy and the importance of ethics and the environment within business decision‑making. Through case studies, discussions and research, learners deepen their knowledge of globalisation, technological change and evolving consumer behaviour, enabling them to analyse and evaluate business decisions with insight and confidence.

By fully aligning our curriculum with the expectations, structure and aims of the Edexcel GCSE specification, we ensure that students not only gain the knowledge required for examination success but also develop into informed, responsible and analytically capable young people, prepared to thrive in further study and future careers.

Business Studies at Weston develops the whole student. Our approach supports:

  • Students learn through applying business concepts to real‑world case studies, practical tasks, financial calculations and decision‑making scenarios, enabling them to develop confident operational and analytical skills.
  • Students develop the values that underpin responsible business practice: empathy, ethical awareness, social responsibility and an appreciation of how business decisions impact people, communities and the wider world.
  • Students build deep, secure and well‑connected knowledge of business theory and practice, enabling them to think critically, evaluate evidence and make informed, strategic decisions.

Through this structured approach, students develop a deep and connected understanding of core business theories, demonstrating how business growth stages, external influences, and strategic decision‑making shape the development and performance of organisations.
