At Weston Secondary School, our vision is to nurture confident, creative and visually literate young people who can communicate ideas with clarity and imagination. Graphic Design enables students to explore a rich range of creative disciplines including illustration, typography, layout, colour theory, digital media and visual communication. Through purposeful and engaging projects, students develop the skills, curiosity and confidence required to express themselves in an increasingly visual world.

Graphic Design sits within the Design and Technology carousel at Key Stage 3, offering every student the opportunity to explore creative thinking through both traditional and digital processes. Students investigate designers and artists, develop visual communication skills, and learn how to design, refine and present creative outcomes.

The curriculum reflects the expectations of the UK National Curriculum by teaching students to use a range of materials creatively, apply a range of practical techniques, explore the work of designers, and develop their ability to analyse, evaluate and communicate ideas effectively.

Through structured projects, students develop technical drawing, typography, composition skills, digital literacy and creative independence. They learn how to use design software confidently and responsibly, preparing them for future creative pathways.

Graphic Design at Weston supports the development of the whole student.  Our approach supports:

  • Knowledge of visual communication, colour theory, typography, composition and the design process
  • Confidence, resilience, creative expression, cultural appreciation and responsible digital practice
  • Technical drawing, digital software skills, rendering, layout, pattern development and construction techniques

This curriculum reflects national curriculum aims of design, make, evaluate and technical knowledge by enabling students to explore ideas, refine techniques, evaluate outcomes and express themselves through meaningful and personal creative work.
