At Weston Secondary School, our vision is to empower every student with the knowledge, confidence and practical capability to make informed and responsible food choices throughout their lives. We deliver a high quality curriculum that promotes healthy living, food safety, creativity and scientific understanding. Students develop essential life skills, nutritional awareness and confidence in preparing a wide range of dishes while exploring how food choices affect health, wellbeing, society and the environment.
Our Food Preparation and Nutrition curriculum sits within the Design and Technology carousel at Key Stage 3 and is designed to reflect the expectations of the UK National Curriculum. Throughout Key Stage 3, students learn through a balance of practical cooking and theoretical knowledge that includes nutrition, health, food provenance, safety and food science. These strands build secure foundations for those who progress to GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition, ensuring clear continuity and increasing challenge across the key stages.
Practical skills are central to the curriculum. Students are taught to prepare and cook dishes safely and independently while following routines that build good habits for life. Alongside this, students explore the cultural, ethical and environmental influences that shape food choices, helping them to understand global food issues and sustainable practice.
The curriculum is inclusive and accessible for all learners, with structured guidance and scaffolding when needed and opportunities for stretch, creativity and independence as students progress.
Food Preparation and Nutrition at Weston develops the whole student. Our approach supports:
- Strong knowledge of nutrition, food science, diet related health, food safety and food provenance
- Positive attitudes to healthy living, sustainability, collaboration, resilience and respect for cultural diversity
- Technical competence, independence, accurate preparation skills and creativity in producing high quality dishes
This reflects national curriculum aims by equipping students to cook, to understand nutrition and to apply food science confidently and safely.
KS4 Food Preparation & Nutrition – Curriculum Intent (WJEC Eduqas)
At Weston Secondary School, our GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition course gives students the knowledge and confidence to make healthy food choices and cook independently. The curriculum helps them understand how food affects their health, wellbeing and the world around them, while developing the practical skills they need for life.
Students learn about nutrition, food science, food safety and where our food comes from. They explore how culture, lifestyle and the environment influence what we eat. Practical work is central to the course, and students cook regularly, gradually taking on more complex dishes and learning how to prepare food safely and professionally.
Throughout the course, students build confidence, creativity and independence. They are encouraged to experiment, problem‑solve and reflect on their work, developing resilience and pride in their achievements. They also gain an appreciation of global food cultures and sustainable choices.
The curriculum is designed to prepare students fully for their GCSE assessments. They learn how to investigate ingredients for NEA 1, plan and cook a menu for NEA 2, and apply their knowledge of nutrition and food science in the written exam. Clear modelling and structured practice ensure that all learners can succeed.
