History at Weston Secondary School aims to allow students to develop historical knowledge and historical thinking and, as a result, enabled them to show their historical understanding. They will carry out investigations and enquiries about events and people from the past and this allows students to be open minded and reach their own opinions.

Key Stage Three

During Key Stage 3 students will study history in a thematic approach across three time periods from the Medieval Times to the Modern Times. The themes include War and Conflict, crime and punishment and the who were / are the British, which allows the students to study the movements, events, people and ideas that have shaped the world throughout time.

The thematic curriculum is divided into units which are underpinned by teaching of skills and concepts. We aim that all our students become confident at analysing and evaluating sources, deconstructing interpretations and explaining the causes of key events and changes in the topics explored, we aim for our students to produce their own informed and substantiated histories.

Key Stage Four

At Key Stage 4 GCSE students will complete four units from different time periods that build upon the skills and knowledge developed in the lower school. The units include Germany and USA during the twentieth century, the Elizabethan Age and the development of health and medicine from the Medieval Times to the present day.

The subject of history will allow students to focus on careers related directly to historical knowledge such as archaeology and museum curator. More importantly the skills of history are transferable to careers such as law and policing, journalism and research, politics and government.
