At Weston Secondary School, Science is designed to be engaging, challenging and relevant, helping students to understand the world around them while developing the skills they need for success beyond the classroom. Our science curriculum develops curious, confident and capable learners, equipping students with the scientific knowledge, practical skills and resilience needed for success at GCSE and beyond.

Key Stage Three

Our Key Stage 3 Science curriculum aims to spark curiosity and enjoyment in learning. Lessons are practical, interactive, and discussion-rich, encouraging students to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop confidence as young scientists.

Students study a broad and balanced curriculum across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with a strong emphasis on:
• Hands-on practical work and investigations
• Developing scientific vocabulary and communication skills
• Applying mathematics in science in meaningful contexts
• Building core enquiry skills such as planning, analysing data and evaluating results

By the end of Key Stage 3, students have a secure foundation of scientific knowledge and the skills needed to think critically and work independently.

Key Stage Four

At Key Stage 4, students build directly on the knowledge and skills developed at Key Stage 3 as they follow the GCSE Science curriculum. Teaching focuses on deepening understanding, refining exam techniques, and applying knowledge to unfamiliar contexts.

Across Key Stage 4, students are supported to:
• Master key scientific concepts and required practical skills
• Develop confident use of command words and extended answers
• Strengthen mathematics and data analysis skills for science exams
• Apply scientific thinking to real-world problems

Regular assessment and targeted support ensure students know how to improve and feel confident and prepared for their GCSE examinations.
